enlightened77 @ 1:49pm: xxx
the late-night mass at the cathedral was lovely, and i would like to post more about it later.
it was a lovely christmas eve holiday overall.

now i need to make some coffee and start getting my blood moving through my body.

if Santa Claus is all done delivering toys to the good little christian children,
perhaps he could bring his sled by to help me finish the moving process?

enlightened77 @ 12:25pm: christmas eve for pagans
Would anyone like to do a Blue & Black Christmas with me this evening?

Meaning... we go to a big catholic church
and sit quietly and solemnly for a 10pm or midnight liturgy tonight,
then go to the Fez for the Shadowplay goth dancing.

I'll probably do the church part alone unless someone REALLY wants to go with me.
I know it's kind of weird as a Pagan to do this, but it is something I tend to do once in a blue moon.
I'm not a morning-person though, so evening services, the later the better, are always preferred.

When I woke up this morning, I felt like I had been so exhausted that I had just barely gotten caught up on lost sleep from the last few days, and now I should sleep another few hours to be caught up for today. There is too much to do, though. Trying to fit in time to eat lunch, take a shower, get caught up on laundry, go to the grocery store, as well as drive to the old house and pick up more stuff and drive it back here....

I'll be ready to repent later, for sure.
Really, I'm going to go shake my fist at God and cry "WHY ME???".

enlightened77 @ 11:01am: top 10 signs of progress

Top 10 Signs of Progress in 2009

By any measure, 2009 has been the best year for marijuana policy reform in U.S. history. Indeed, public support for making marijuana legal just reached a record high of 44% nationwide. And check out these 10 signs of progress, all 10 of which have been spearheaded by MPP:

1. The governments of Massachusetts and Michigan implemented, without controversy, the ballot initiatives we passed in these two states on November 4 of last year. As a result, marijuana possession is now a $100 ticketable offense in Massachusetts (which therefore has the best marijuana-possession law in the country), and the possession and cultivation of medical marijuana is now legal in Michigan (which is the first midwestern state to legalize medical marijuana).

2. On October 19, the Obama administration announced that the DEA and the Justice Department would de-prioritize any new raids of medical marijuana establishments in California and elsewhere that are abiding by state law. This is the most significant, positive change in federal marijuana policy in 31 years!

3. On November 10, the American Medical Association rescinded its previous support of classifying marijuana alongside LSD, PCP, and heroin under federal law. The AMA calling for a federal review of marijuana's legal status has provided a huge boost to our lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill, just as we're pushing for the U.S. House to hold hearings in two months.

4. MPP has made significant progress on medical marijuana bills in Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and New York. (Indeed, we passed our bills through the Minnesota and New Hampshire legislatures this year, only to see both bills vetoed by hostile governors.) If we succeed in seven of those states between now and the summer of 2011 — which is actually looking likely at this point — the number of medical marijuana states will jump from 13 to 20. (In addition, the passage of the Drug Policy Alliance's bill in New Jersey, our 2010 initiative in Arizona, and a 2010 South Dakota initiative could bring the number to 23.)

5. We've already collected 200,000 of the 250,000 signatures that are needed in Arizona to place on the November 2010 ballot an initiative to legalize medical marijuana, including authorizing 120 dispensaries statewide, which would give Arizona the best medical marijuana law in the country. Fully 65% of Arizona voters support this initiative. It's easy to imagine this initiative will pass by a landslide in one year, given that the voters of Maine passed a similar initiative one month ago with 59% of the vote — with literally no money spent on advertising.

6. In California, a bill to tax and regulate marijuana like alcohol is pending in the state Assembly, the introduction of which generated a huge wave of positive news coverage nationwide, which we followed up with a TV ad that generated an even bigger wave of news coverage. We're working to build support for this landmark piece of legislation, which has a chance to pass out of a committee in January.

7. MPP recently opened an office in Las Vegas, for the purpose of building a statewide coalition to pass a ballot initiative to tax and regulate marijuana like alcohol. A similar initiative received 44% of the vote in November 2006, and support for making marijuana legal is rising by more than 1% a year, so we fully plan to pass this initiative in November 2012, which would give Nevada the best marijuana law in the world.

8. Other than California and Nevada, there are at least four other states that are now in play for being the first to end marijuana prohibition entirely: (1) Colorado, which has seen an explosion of medical marijuana dispensaries since January and is now polling at 48% in favor of regulating marijuana like alcohol; (2) Rhode Island, which recently overrode its governor's veto in order to legalize medical marijuana dispensaries in the state, and which has since launched a study commission to draft a bill to regulate marijuana like alcohol; (3) New Hampshire, where a bill to regulate and tax marijuana has been introduced for the 2010 session; and (4) Washington state, where six representatives have prefiled a bill to tax and regulate marijuana.

9. After 11 years of MPP's congressional lobbying efforts, the U.S. Congress finally removed the federal ban on implementing Washington, D.C.'s medical marijuana law. Medical marijuana could be available in our nation's capital starting this spring.

10. And it looks like, finally, we'll soon have a bill introduced in Congress that would wipe out marijuana prohibition entirely on the federal level, which is our ultimate goal in Washington, D.C. This will take years to pass, so we might as well get started now.

tom7radar @ 2:04pm: Club Café show, new year's eve-eve

We will be playing the new year's eve-eve (that's Dec. 30th) late show at club cafe with our real-life friends Slingshot Genius (acoustic version) at Club Café in the South Side. I've always wanted to play at Club Café; I think it's my favorite venue in Pittsburgh. (In particular I always love the sound there.) So I'm pretty psyched! Also psyched to play with Erika's band. Come down South if you're in town! (Facebook event for the web-lifestyle enabled.)
enlightened77 @ 12:13pm: haiku foolishness
i was bored for a few minutes the other night, and wrote this string of ridiculous haikus:

bitter equality
I pursued the man this time
I am still lonely

feminists were brave
spoke up while being shut down
my dainty lips trip

eyeliner, lip gloss
perfumed neck, wrists, and waistline
will he notice me?

picky and prudish
few candidates to choose from
my Zodiac curse.

Incarnation

If I could live this life
a thousand times...
If I could multiply, divide myself,
I would go with you,
and see it all the way through.

If I could live my life
a thousand ways every day,
each a particular trajectory,
I could then take the risk,
time to explore
something more with you.

If I could dream a lifetime
each night I go to sleep...
If I could rest my eyes
but set my soul free,
I would live until my death with you
in the time I am asleep.

If I could break free
from singularity,
then I would concede,
I would concede.

enlightened77 @ 1:30pm: Washington DC Snowpocalypse!
My dad emailed me a photo of my mother in the back yard of the house, standing in a foot of snow that fell overnight. It made me think about how everyone here in Portland is like "OMG we got MAJOR SNOWZ last year" and how the city shut itself down for a few days.

A friend in DC posted a video someone got this morning of a metrobus trying to navigate up a slight incline on 18th street (Adams Morgan area). Its kind of funny.

The DC area does not really allow tire chains because it tears up the roads, and they have enough trouble repaving and filling in cracks and potholes from frozen precipitation, etc, without chains tearing up the roads. (This is why I noticed the roads are so much "louder" when you drive on them out here in Oregon than in DC.)

Anyway, go check out the video of the DC Metrobus spinning wheels in the snow.

Everyone tells me that Portland's winters are much milder than DC. It may get a little colder here earlier in the season, but it does seem to stay pretty mild, and I'm not expecting 2 feet of snow to fall anytime soon. I am eager, however, to invest in some flat-heeled Ugg-like boots, lined with wool or fleece or something, to keep my legs warm as I prance around downtown for my 1st Portland winter! I have already discovered the beautiful science of legwarmers, tights, and leggings, and am thankful for the 80's fashion kickback for various practical reasons.

all I want for Christmas
and Solstice, Yule, and Hannukah, is...

... to have strong, healthy friendships with new and old friends.

... to have music projects to work on that both purge and refill my soul.

... to have a more confident heart and clear-headed mind that work together,
not against each other.

... to continue to rebuild my career after the Great Recession '09
and only look back when I need to reflect on how I got through the "hard times".

... a strong shiatsu, deep-tissue massage so I can start to get feeling in my back again.

... to eventually actually meet my real soulmate and stop this incessant and ridiculous search for a husband.

... maybe a vacation to Los Angeles to visit some girlfriends later in the season when I start to get cabin-fever.

... and eventually, maybe later this year, be able to get my own little apartment again.
enlightened77 @ 2:22am: roadkill
today was non-stop, worked both jobs,
picked up a friend from the airport, drove her to Salem,
caught my breath, and i really want a hot shower,
and an hour-long professional massage
because every muscle in my back feels like junk, run over by trucks,
pulverized, pounded, twisted, kicked, punched, and crushed.

i'm almost too tired for a shower.

*sigh*

garote @ 4:27pm: How to remove "extended attributes" from a manually restored Time Machine backup in OS X
This took me way too long to work out, so I'm dropping it here for future reference.

Time Machine does not create ACLs - Access Control Lists - in its backups. Instead it adds "extended attributes" to each file and folder, which is something different. If you restore these files by hand, by copying them straight onto your hard drive, the extended attributes are carried along and will prevent you from altering the files later.

To remove the attributes that Time Machine creates, these two commands will work:

find . -print0 | xargs -0 xattr -d com.apple.metadata:_kTimeMachineOldestSnapshot
find . -print0 | xargs -0 xattr -d com.apple.metadata:_kTimeMachineNewestSnapshot

Run them as root, and at the base of the tree you want to clear.

tom7radar @ 10:18am: Song, scissors
Here is another new T7ES song, Theme from alaplantine.

Also, remember those mega scissors from post 976 that allow you to shred important papers quickly and easily? Probably not. I do, though, so when I'm at my friend's house for dinner and he's like, guys, mystery time: WTF are these mega scissors that I found in the drawer and what are they for? I know the answer. And then I shredded an important credit card, which was not easy:
